Gabriel Obertan back for Newcastle United

Newcastle’s manager, Rafael Benitez has informed Gabriel Obertan that he may have a role to play in the Magpies relegation battle.

Injured since September, the winger has spent most of his time in the injury room.

However, with the appointment of Rafael Benitez, he may have a chance to make his return to the first team.

Oddly enough, Gabriel Obertan did start this current campaign in the first team and even provided an assist for GeorginioWijnaldum. However, since his injury he has yet to make an appearance this campaign for Newcastle United.

Obertan came to the Premier League in 2009 when he signed for Manchester United from French side Bordeaux. He made 28 appearances for the Red Devils but failed to fulfil the potential that he showed during his youth and scored only one goal.

He joined Newcastle United in 2011 and had since made only 69 appearances. In fairness, his Newcastle’s career has been plagued by injuries, and he has only managed 3 goals so far.

Benitez believes that each member of the Newcastle squad has a role to play in the relegation battle and expect them to give their maximum to prevent the club from dropping to the Championship. The new manager is satisfied with the effort of the players and believes that they are listening to the instructions and following them.

Newcastle is currently 19th in the Premier League and is 3 points off Norwich, who is in the 17th place. With 8 games left to play, Rafael Benitez will need his all squad to perform at their best, so as to get out of the present situation. Gabriel Obertan will be expected to do the same and who knows maybe his performance during the closing stage of this season may be rewarded with a new contract.
