OBERTAN GOAL SEALS UNITED'S VICTORY
|
|
Gabriel Obertan scored the only goal of the game which helped Manchester United win their pre-season match against Philadelphia Union. Federico Macheda and Danny Welbeck, two of Ferguson's principal reasons for confidence in his young players, were paired in attack and demonstrated flashes of the pace and touch required to stake a greater claim next season. Welbeck's movement was also impressive, although his finishing and the Italian's decision-making betrayed their inexperience against a well-organised and athletic Philadelphia Union side.
Welbeck went close from 25 yards in the first half and with an audacious shot on the turn at the start of the second. His simplest chance was also one to regret when, having collected Fabio's cross from the left and stepped inside his marker, the United striker shot straight at Brad Knighton in the Union goal from eight yards.
The first half lacked incident with the exception of two trademark Paul Scholes challenges that demonstrated genuine commitment to the friendly and an acknowledgement that, at the age of 35, he is not about to hone his timing in the tackle. A two-footed swipe at the Union midfielder Fred was followed by a clattering challenge through Eduardo Coudet, giving the referee no option but to show a yellow card.
Of the relative unknowns on display it was Tom Cleverley who showed arguably the greatest development in United's colours. The England Under-21 international was rewarded for a lively cameo against Celtic in Toronto with a place alongside Scholes in central midfield and delivered an astute performance, particularly in the final third.
Philadelphia went close to taking the lead several times as United's defence was easily prised apart but, with 14 minutes remaining, they undermined a resilient performance with one misplaced pass in midfield. Welbeck seized on the loose ball and threaded a perfectly weighted pass through three Union defenders into the path of Gabriel Obertan, who produced a clinical low finish.

OBERTAN NOT INTERESTED IN RANGERS MOVE
|
|
Gabriel Obertan, the French winger has been linked with a move to Rangers but the agent of Manchester United winger Gabriel Obertan has cooled talk of a move to Rangers.
Obertan has been linked with a loan move to Ibrox.
His agent, Karim Djaziri, told Scotland's Evening Times: "Gabriel Obertan is going to stay with Manchester United next season.
"We spoke at length with the manager and the club at the end of last season and there wasn’t any intention of him being loaned out to another club."

ROBSON TIPS OBERTAN
|
|
United legend Bryan Robson has tipped Gabriel Obertan to come good next season - when youth gets it's chance to shine.
“The gaffer will give front players like Federico Macheda and Danny Welbeck the chance to prove themselves.
“He’s patient because of their age and the knowledge that they need time.
“The player I really think will come through is Gabriel Obertan. He’s been used mainly wide, but I think his best position might be through the middle.
“All of these young players are on a learning curve and the next season or two will be very important.
“They will determine whether or not they are genuine Manchester United players.”

Obertan wants Matches
|
|
Gabriel Obertan is hoping his hard work in training will lead to a recall to the Manchester United team for the final games of the season.
The 21-year-old scored the winner for the reserves against Liverpool on Tuesday night in front of Sir Alex Ferguson and hopes that will boost his prospects of featuring in the remaining four matches of the campaign.
"It is good for the confidence to score some goals and good when the manager is watching the game," Obertan told MUTV. "There are four matches left in the Premier League so it would be nice to be able to have a few minutes on the pitch.
"It's been a bit difficult the last couple of months, but I've worked hard with the reserves and in training, and it is paying off."

GABRIEL OBERTAN TO BE SOLD IN THE SUMMER?
|
|
Owen is included in a host of players on the 'sale' list, as well as Ben Foster, a keeper who has seemingly slipped down the pecking order behind Edwin van der Sar and Tomasz Kuszczak.
As many as 10 to 15 players could be set for the exit door, with Owen Hargreaves, Nani and Gabriel Obertan all believed to be part of that group.
A clutch of promising youngsters could also leave as the club's mounting debt begins to affect on-field matters at last. Tom Cleverley, Craig Cathcart (both on loan Watford), Danny Welbeck (on loan Preston North End) and Zoran Tosic (on loan at FC Cologne) could all move out of Old Trafford permanently.
Fans were betting Anderson was set to join that list but his recent injury has apparently put plans to cash in on the Brazilian on hold.

Obertan to play Barnsley
|
|
Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Gabriel Obertan will make his Manchester United debut at Barnsley in the League Cup on Tuesday night.
The promising French winger has endured a frustrating time with injury since arriving at Old Trafford in the summer, having been sidelined by a spinal injury.
But having got through three reserve matches unscathed, United boss Ferguson confirmed that the 20-year-old was all set to make his first senior start for the Red Devils.
Speaking to Paris Sportifs En Ligne, Fergie said "Obertan will play tomorrow against Barnsley, it is a good start for him," Ferguson told United's official website.

Obertan 7/2 to score on debut
|
|
French winger Gabriel Obertan is set to make his debut for Manchester United in their Carling Cup clash at Barnsley and bookmakers don't know what to make of the highly-rated 20-year-old.
Obertan has been given time to get over a niggling back injury since arriving at Old Trafford in July but Sir Alex Ferguson insists: "We expect big things from him.
"At 16 he was one of Europe's outstanding young talents," the Red Devils' boss told manutd.com. "He's very quick and he can play both sides or through the middle so he brings a real versatility to us."
Obertan received rave reviews for a recent run-out in the reserves at Oldham and is as short as 6/5 with Coral to score on his first outing for the first team, but Sky Bet are taking a chance on his sharpness by offering 7/2 he hits the net at anytime.
