CONFIDENCE BOOST

Gabriel Obertan has said that the three goals that he scored while playing for Newcastle’s U-21 side against Crystal Palace have boosted his confidence.

Obertan has not been getting opportunities to play for Newcastle’s senior team in this season.

He was not qualified to play for the U-21 team as he was 24 years of age, but, he was asked to play and he put up a great performance. By the virtue of his hat trick, his side won the match by 4-0.

Talking to the reporters after the match, Obertan said, “That certainly lifted my confidence level. It was nice to play with the junior guys. They were very enthusiastic on the field and I also tried to match them in terms of enthusiasm.”

“I enjoyed myself a lot. It was after a while that I was playing in a competitive game and I am completely satisfied with what I did on the field.”

“Currently, my focus is on staying fit so that when chances come my way, I can grab them with both hands.”
Obertan had joined Newcastle United at the start of the last season after leaving Manchester United. Newcastle had bought him after paying a transfer fee of 3 million Pounds.

Obertan was given regular playing chances in the first half of the 2011-12 season, but, he couldn’t make any impact and as a result, he spent most parts of the second half sitting on the bench.

In the ongoing season, Obertan hasn’t performed badly in the limited no. of matches that he has played. In October last year, he found the net while playing in a Europa League clash against Club Brugge which is a Belgian club.

Obertan has so far featured for Newcastle in 36 matches and has managed to score only a couple of goals.
