Gabriel Obertan arrived to Newcastle United on August 9 of 2011 with a price tag of £3 million and in his debut season with the English club, Obertan enjoyed having a fairly successful period of time as he made 23 appearances, 5 of them arriving from the bench while the rest were from the start of the actual match as the French player was a consistent regular starter for the majority of his time spent at St. James’ Park.

Things did not go as impressively for Gabriel Obertan in his following seasons as a player of Newcastle United with fewer appearances being made and eventually there was a point in time when Obertan simply wasn’t a regular starter as he dropped to the sidelines.

After falling out from the first team of Newcastle United, Gabriel Obertan opted to join the Russian side Anzhi Makhachkala. Earlier on August it was confirmed that Obertan had penned a 2 year long contract with Anzhi and was given the number 99 shirt in his new club.

The 27 year old winger has talked about his time underwhelming time that was spent performing at Old Trafford as a player of Manchester United as the Frenchman said:

“I have to admit that it was fun, but you have to be also playing for such comparisons. You have to stay focused, concentrated. After all the compliments I got lost. I was too playful. I only later learned how I can deal better with my emotions on the field. Is my playing style like Henry? A little bit. I also once had a picture with him.”

On July 9 of 2009 it was officially confirmed that Gabriel Obertan had completed his move to Manchester United but he only managed to make around 14 appearances in 2 seasons. One of the reasons of why Obertan made such a low amount of appearances is because of injuries but nonetheless, he is hoping that things will be better with his latest club AnzhiMakhachkala.
